Weekly Message 1/30/2021

Greetings and happy Saturday! I hope you are all doing well!  I can't believe January is almost over - where did the month go?  As I mentioned in class, under each LON-CAPA problem is a discussion board. Feel free to use that to ask questions about a particular problem. All I ask is that you don't post complete solutions, but feel free to provide guidance and/or support for your classmates. I would love for the discussion boards to help create a learning community.  On Monday we will discuss emission factors and also how this relates to Project 1, which is posted on LON-CAPA in the project folder. I have also posted team assignments there. On Wednesday, we will begin a discussion of the health effects of air pollutants. As part of that unit, you may be interested in some recent reports: Air pollution is linked to permanent vision loss   Air pollution is a serious threat to human health in Salt Lake City, Utah The article mentioned can be found here Air Pollution in S...

Greetings and Happy Sunday! I hope all is well with all of you. This week in ENE 489 we will look at the sources and types of air pollutants.  We'll also review relevant chemistry and mass and energy balances, in the context of air pollution. In addition to the lecture notes (which are posted on LON-CAPA), the review material (from the reading, reviewing, reflecting week) should be especially helpful.  Additional reading material is posted in the "Reading material" folder - "Fundamentals of Air Pollution" subfolder.  Links to the Overview and History of Air Pollution lectures are provided on LON-CAPA. Participation Question 1 is open and your response is due this Monday 1/25 at 11:59 pm. Homework 1 is also open and is due Monday 2/1 at 11:59 pm and includes 3 parts (in separate sub-folders).   You can also check due dates using the calendar function on LON-CAPA:   Please let me know if you have any questions.  "See" you in class on Monday! All the best...

January 17, 2020 I hope that you all are well. As mentioned in my email from last week, I have posted review material in LON-CAPA. The review material is based on ENE 280.  I have also posted a short video showing how to navigate LON-CAPA. It is posted at https://youtu.be/HAt0dFvkTrk.  Also posted is the first lecture, which is an overview of ENE 489: https://youtu.be/xdF44gxkbs4.  Links are also provided on LON-CAPA. For those of you that missed my first email message sent in early January, it is posted on the course blog: https://ene489spring2021.blogspot.com/.  I will continue to post weekly messages on the blog. For those of you that missed the survey, please complete it as soon as possible. It is available at:  https://forms.gle/22V7gonYtzV9XtC98 I thought I would start with answering some of your questions from the survey, which if you haven't completed, please do so:  (1) Q: Do we need to have access to all of the recommended written materials ...

Greetings and welcome to ENE 489, I hope all of you are well and have enjoyed the break between semesters. It is now clear that the semester will begin on January 19th, with the previous week being a week for "reading, reviewing, and reflecting" (or perhaps resting, relaxing, and rejuvenating).  Either way, this semester will happen. I've set up the course website ( LON-CAPA ), which you will be able to access as of 1/4/2021. You will sign in as you would normally on D2L. There is a folder on the site with review material for you so that, if you desire, you can look over material from ENE 280 and past chemistry courses. I'll post additional material as it becomes available. The syllabus is also posted. I will run the course synchronously with recorded lectures that I will post on my YouTube channel . I encourage you to attend class so that you have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with your classmates. There will be homework (yes, for those of you tha...
