Weekly Message 3/27/2021

Happy Saturday,

I hope you are doing well and enjoy this week's participation question which asks you to go outside and take in the sights, smells, and sounds of Spring. 




We will continue control of air pollutants this next week and will finish looking at centrifugal separators on Monday.  We'll look at electrostatic precipitators and filtration this next week. 

The homework on ambient air quality modeling is due on Monday March 29.  If you need the 48 h grace period, just let me know. Participation question 10 is due on the same day.

I plan to post the description of Project 3 early this week.  It will be due on April 26th (the day the final exam is scheduled), with a grace period of 96 h (the end of finals week).  Project 3 is written as a hypothetical situation (though based on a proposed project) in Kalkaska County for increased fracking.  It involves both modelling and engineering control technology and even incorporates GHG emissions from earlier in the semester.  We will not be participating in the AWMA ECi competition as part of class. I figured we all need a break from Zoom meetings and the like.  However, if you do wish to participate please let me know.  Details are provided here: A&WMA ECi Competition.

Lansing Board of Water and Light is offering two $1500 fellowships this summer for students who wish to work on a study testing groundwater in Clinton County. The testing would likely take about 10 hours per week and could be developed into an independent study project. The independent study can be completed as a ENE 490 or ENE 880.  ENE 490 classes can be used as ENE technical electives and ENE 880 courses can be used as part of a grad plan. Greetings and happy Saturday! I hope you are all doing well!  I can't believe January is almost over - where did the month go?  As I mentioned in class, under each LON-CAPA problem is a discussion board. Feel free to use that to ask questions about a particular problem. All I ask is that you don't post complete solutions, but feel free to provide guidance and/or support for your classmates. I would love for the discussion boards to help create a learning community.  On Monday we will discuss emission factors and also how this relates to Project 1, which is posted on LON-CAPA in the project folder. I have also posted team assignments there. On Wednesday, we will begin a discussion of the health effects of air pollutants.   Happy Monday, I apologize for the lateness of this weekly message. I don't have any good excuse - I just forgot to write it.  I all of you had a wonderful weekend. I took some time to get in three very nice walks (and over 10 miles). Although it doesn't look like it in the photos, Spring is really here. On Sunday, I walked in the Ingham County Conservation District in Mason with a friend. We saw (and heard) geese, wood ducks, mallard ducks, turtles, wood frogs, a coopers hawk, red-winged blackbird, a muskrat, merganser ducks, and spring peepers. And we saw a garter snake, along with trout lilies and skunk cabbage pushing up from the soil.
