Weekly Message 2/28/2021

Happy Sunday!

I apologize for not sending this message out sooner, but the weekend seemed to slip by. 

A year ago today was the last time I
  • walked across campus to lecture
  • could see my students' faces and expressions during class
  • gave an exam
  • walked back to EB while talking to a student
  • didn't lecture over Zoom (I got permission to start lecturing online over Spring Break so I didn't go back into the classroom after break)

Where did the year go? 

In Monday's class, I'll introduce Project 2, which will focus on making recommendations regarding controls to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in public spaces.  Student teams will be given time to process material in breakout groups, please attend class if you are able to. 

No class on Wednesday due to the two-day break.  On Friday, we'll discuss the Clean Air Act. 

Also, Participation Question 5 along with homework on acid rain, urban smog, and ozone depletion are due on Monday at 11:59 pm. If you need the grace period (until March 5 at 11:59 pm due to the two-day break), please let me know so I can adjust the due date. 

Also, there are numerous scholarship opportunities posted on the ENE 489 blog.

Greetings and happy Saturday! I hope you are all doing well!  I can't believe January is almost over - where did the month go?  As I mentioned in class, under each LON-CAPA problem is a discussion board. Feel free to use that to ask questions about a particular problem. All I ask is that you don't post complete solutions, but feel free to provide guidance and/or support for your classmates. I would love for the discussion boards to help create a learning community.  On Monday we will discuss emission factors and also how this relates to Project 1, which is posted on LON-CAPA in the project folder. I have also posted team assignments there. On Wednesday, we will begin a discussion of the health effects of air pollutants.   Happy Monday, I apologize for the lateness of this weekly message. I don't have any good excuse - I just forgot to write it.  I all of you had a wonderful weekend. I took some time to get in three very nice walks (and over 10 miles). Although it doesn't look like it in the photos, Spring is really here. On Sunday, I walked in the Ingham County Conservation District in Mason with a friend. We saw (and heard) geese, wood ducks, mallard ducks, turtles, wood frogs, a coopers hawk, red-winged blackbird, a muskrat, merganser ducks, and spring peepers. And we saw a garter snake, along with trout lilies and skunk cabbage pushing up from the soil. We will continue control of air pollutants, focusing our discussion on gaseous pollutants.  The homework on primary particulate control technologies (gravity settlers, centrifugal separators, ESPs) is due on Monday April 5.  If you need the 48 h grace period, just let me know.
