Weekly message 2/14/2021

Happy Sunday!!!

I hope all of you are doing well! It looks like only two more days of really cold weather (highs in the teens); after Wednesday we'll have a heat wave (haha) with max temperatures in the twenties and then the following week in the thirties!

I hope you all found Dr. Lupita Montoya's presentation interesting and though-provoking.  I've provided the link to the presentation on LON-CAPA and the recording is posted on YouTube (private, so you will need the link).  Dr. Montoya offered to talk with anyone who is interested in her work, so if you are, just let me know and I'll send you her contact information.

On Monday, we will look at OSHA regulations as they relate to air quality. The powerpoint is posted on LON-CAPA.  On Wednesday, we will begin looking at a series of air pollution issues: acid rain and visibility, tropospheric ozone smog, stratospheric ozone depletion, and then climate change.

It's hard to believe that we're almost to the point where I began recording lectures on Zoom last year after moving to remote learning after Spring Break. And to think that at that point in time, we thought we would be remote for only a few months. Let's hope by Fall, we're all back in the classroom and things are at least close to normal. Although, perhaps we'll think more about protecting public health in the future by wearing masks when we have colds (or better yet, staying home), ensuring sufficient ventilation, monitoring CO2 levels in indoor spaces, etc. Project 2 will be focused exactly on these issues.

Just a few reminders:

  • Homework on health effects and indoor air quality is due on 2/15 at 11:59 pm.  If you need the 48-h grace period, just email me to let me know. If you email me after 9:30 pm on Monday, I will reset the due date on Tuesday morning so that you will again have access.
  • The homework assignment on OSHA regulations (4 short problems) will be due on 2/19 at 11:59 pm.  It shouldn't take you more than about 15-20 minutes to complete it.
  • Participation question 4 is also due on 2/15 at 11:59 pm.

  • Project 1 is due on 2/22 at 11:59 pm.  If you will need the 72-h grace period, let me know next weekend and I will reset the due date for your group.  Also, I've set up groups on LON-CAPA so you also have shared work space, can email group members, and can chat.  I haven't done this in the past, so I'm not exactly sure how this will work, but I wanted you to know that it is an option.

I hope all of you are well and I'll "see" you in class on Monday!

Dr. Masten
