The Structural Engineers Foundation (SEF)

The Structural Engineers Foundation (SEF) is currently accepting applications for the upcoming academic year for undergraduate and graduate students studying structural engineering.   Applicants will be evaluated on scholarship, leadership, and academic involvement.  Up to five scholarships will be awarded, each in the amount of $3,000.  One of the five scholarships, the Max Zar scholarship, will be awarded to students enrolled in a school in Illinois. The Rubinos-Mesia scholarship is awarded to a student of Hispanic descent. The Fred Haas Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Graduate student who demonstrates interest in structural steel design and construction. And new this year, the SEF Diversity Scholarship is awarded to a Junior or above from an underrepresented group in Structural Engineering, including students who identify as female, African American/Black, Indigenous or Hispanic/Latinx.

The Scholarship Information & Application form includes eligibility requirements and application guidelines and must be submitted electronically via a Google form.  This information is also available on our website. Scholarship applications must be received by Tuesday, June 1, 2021.  Winners will be notified by July 1, 2021.

The SEF was established in late 1993 in recognition of the 75th birthday of the Structural Engineering Act of Illinois.  It was set up to provide financial support for the educational and charitable activities of the structural engineering profession, including items like scholarships, honoraria for lecturers and research grants.  The Foundation is funded by individual engineers, engineering firms and other businesses and organizations associated with engineering and construction.  SEF is recognized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization by the Internal Revenue Service and contributions are tax-deductible within the limits prescribed by tax laws.

David A Cook Memorial Scholarship Fund for Civil and Env Eng at MSU: Due April 15 (link is to a pdf with instructions)

The Jon A. Kusler Student Scholarship Award was created in 2020 to honor the legacy of the late Dr. Jon A. Kusler, Esq., ASWM’s founder and one of the most influential thinkers of our time regarding wetland and floodplain science, policy, and law. Jon paved the way for wetland and floodplain protection around the world, challenging us to think beyond the norm – to find new and innovative ways to solve some of our most pressing environmental issues.
This competitive award funds all expenses* for one or more students to attend ASWM’s annual State/Tribal/Federal Coordination (STFC) Meeting and is open to any student with a declared major in wetland (or other aquatic resource) science, policy, law, or a related field in either the undergraduate or graduate level.
Submission Requirements:
• Letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor.
• One page letter answering the following questions:
What is your declared major?
Why did you choose your declared major?
What do you plan to do with your degree?
How will attending ASWM’s annual STFC Meeting help you advance your career?
• Deadline for submission is Monday, March 15th, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. ET. Notifications will be sent to all applicants no later than Monday, March 22nd.
• Submissions should be sent as a Microsoft Word or PDF attachment, and should be emailed directly to Marla Stelk, Executive Director, at marla@aswm.org.

 ASCE Scholarships

The Michigan Section of the ASCE encourages the advancement of the Civil Engineering profession by qualified and interested students. To that end, the ASCE Michigan Section offers financial support through two scholarships. These scholarships have been endowed through the efforts and generosity of individual Civil Engineers and leading Civil Engineering companies throughout Michigan. Applications are due by Memorial Day.

 

Mackinac Scholarship

Named in honor of Michigan's #1 Civil Engineering Project of the 20th Century by the ASCE Michigan Section membership in December 1999, the Mackinac Scholarship is intended to recognize a premier Civil Engineering student from Michigan. The award will be presented annually, and will consist of a two-year grant of $5,000 each year (totaling $10,000 over a two-year period) to a student entering his or her junior year at an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program. The award considers merit, personal initiative, and financial need and encourages both participation in a student chapter of ASCE and contributions to the advancement of student engineering.

 

Zuidema Scholarship

Named in honor of an outstanding Past-President of the Michigan Section and the Western Michigan Branch of ASCE, the Marvin L. Zuidema Scholarship Award is presented annually to a student member of ASCE who has made a contribution to the advancement of student engineering activities. This award will consist of a one-time grant of $1,500, and considers academic performance as an indication of preparation for a future career in Civil Engineering. The Zuidema scholarship is available to either a junior or senior in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program.

MSU Honors College

The Honors College uses the MSU Scholarships system to manage our scholarships and endowments. Log into https://scholarships.msu.edu/ with your NetID and password to search, filter, and apply for Honors College scholarships. Once you enter it, your information is saved to save time on future applications. You MUST complete the General Application before you can access any other scholarship applications in the system, and then complete the specific scholarship opportunities listed below in order to be fully considered.
 
Some of our scholarships have spring deadlines and most require a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. It is a good idea to ask a faculty member to write a letter about 4 weeks ahead of your deadline. HC staff cannot be recommendation letter writers for our own awards.

  3. Autobiographical statement (500 words or less). Your statement must describe the following: how you got interested in solid waste or related topics, such as sustainability or environmental awareness; any experience you have in solid waste or related topics; any community service or volunteer activities you have performed; your career goals; any additional talents/interests you have that make you stand out as a candidate for an EREF scholarship.
  4. Research Statement (500 words or less): Please write a discussion of your research topic that includes project objectives and the work's relevance to the advancement of solid waste management.

Environmental Engineering and Science Foundation Scholarships

The Environmental Engineering and Science Foundation (EESF) has as its Mission "to secure and direct resources to advance environmental engineering and science in the areas of research, education and practice". Towards that end, the Board of EESF has created six annual scholarships for Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science students at the undergraduate and Master's levels.

A $2,500 scholarship is being offered in each of the following categories:

  • Undergraduate Environmental Engineering*
  • Undergraduate Environmental Science*
  • Master's level Environmental Engineering
  • Master's level Environmental Science
  • Master's level Environmental Engineering for Under-Represented Minority (URM) Students
  • Master's level Environmental Science for Under-Represented Minority (URM) Students

*The two undergraduate scholarships will target students transferring from Community Colleges.

Stantec Equity and Diversity Scholarship

An eligible student will be enrolled full time during the 2021-22 school year in pursuit of a STEAM bachelor’s degree and belong to a historically underrepresented population/group (this includes BIPOC, members of the LGBTQ2+ community, people with disabilities, veterans, first-generation college students, etc.). Individual award amounts range from $1,500 to $10,000 each. The application deadline is coming up on March 15, 2021. All of the information should be in the attached PDF file, but if not you can feel free to reach out to me and I can try to help. Also to note – this application doesn’t come back to my office it goes to corporate where they will make award decisions. I don’t have any additional information on how many people apply or typically get selected, but I do know Stantec will be awarding $200,000 total for this particular scholarship.
