Weekly Message 2/28/2021

Happy Sunday! I apologize for not sending this message out sooner, but the weekend seemed to slip by.  A year ago today was the last time I walked across campus to lecture could see my students' faces and expressions during class gave an exam walked back to EB while talking to a student didn't lecture over Zoom (I got permission to start lecturing online over Spring Break so I didn't go back into the classroom after break) Where did the year go?  In Monday's class, I'll introduce Project 2, which will focus on making recommendations regarding controls to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in public spaces.  Student teams will be given time to process material in breakout groups, please attend class if you are able to.  No class on Wednesday due to the two-day break.  On Friday, we'll discuss the Clean Air Act.  Also, Participation Question 5 along with homework on acid rain, urban smog, and ozone depletion are due on Monday at 11:59 pm. If you need the gr...

Happy Saturday! I hope you are all doing well and spending sometime this weekend to relax and rejuvenate.  It's been a cold and snowy few weeks, but it helps (me at least) to remember that the hope and promise of Spring is just around the corner.   Just a few reminders. Project 1 is due on Monday, Feb. 22 at 11:59pm. If your team needs the 72-h grace period, please let me know.  Participation Question5 is due on Monday night also.  We will discuss stratospheric ozone depletion on Monday and then begin a unit on climate change and greenhouse gases on Wednesday. I have opened the next homework assignments (acid rain and photochemical smog). They are due on Monday, March 1 at 11:59 pm. Because of the 2-day break, the grace period will be Thursday and Friday. As such, if you need the grace period, let me know and I'll reset the due date to Friday March 5. There are a few announcements below, including a request to help a MSU doctoral student by completing a survey on you...

Happy Sunday!!! I hope all of you are doing well! It looks like only two more days of really cold weather (highs in the teens); after Wednesday we'll have a heat wave (haha) with max temperatures in the twenties and then the following week in the thirties!   I hope you all found Dr. Lupita Montoya's presentation interesting and though-provoking.  I've provided the link to the presentation on LON-CAPA and the recording is posted on YouTube (private, so you will need the link).  Dr. Montoya offered to talk with anyone who is interested in her work, so if you are, just let me know and I'll send you her contact information. On Monday, we will look at OSHA regulations as they relate to air quality. The powerpoint is posted on LON-CAPA.  On Wednesday, we will begin looking at a series of air pollution issues: acid rain and visibility, tropospheric ozone smog, stratospheric ozone depletion, and then climate change.  It's hard to believe that we're almost to the po...

Happy Saturday! I hope you are all warm and safe away from the frigid temperatures outside. There is one advantage of the pandemic: it's nice not to have to walk to class in sub-freezing temperatures. We will continue looking at Indoor Air Quality this week.  On Friday we will have a guest lecture by Dr. Lupita Montoya, who will help us connect the IAQ issues with issues of racial injustice, especially in Latinx and Navajo communities. As mentioned earlier this week, Project 1 is posted and is discussed in the lecture: Calculations Part 3 and Project 1:  https://youtu.be/gLtXArwuYEM  There is homework due on Monday, February 8 at 11:59pm (Calculations Part 2 and Sources).  Please email me if you would like a 48 hr grace period.  I've added several scholarship announcements to the class blog, along with a job announcement. I'll continue to update those throughout the semester.  I thought you might be interested in this news article on the e ffect of t...
